How to stabilize shaky phone video
Video stabilization compensates for camera movement between frames. It can make handheld footage easier to watch, but it cannot reconstruct detail lost to motion blur. ConvertFast's Video Stabilizer analyzes movement in one processing pass and renders a stabilized MP4 in a second pass.
Decide whether stabilization fits the recording
Small handheld movements are a reasonable case to try. Rapid pans, strong shake, moving subjects and blurred frames can remain difficult. Stabilization changes the framing, so consider whether important content is already close to the edges of the picture.
Keep the original. If only a short section needs correction, use Trim Video first. Reducing the duration can shorten the stabilization job and makes comparison easier. Trimming does not recover missing picture detail either.
Prepare the file
The tool accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM inputs through its upload interface, with a 500 MB per-file limit. Browser preview depends on the source codec; an accepted extension alone does not ensure local playback. Actual uploads may also be limited by the connection and hosting configuration.
The source file stays on your device until you start the operation. The conversion request uploads it for server-side processing. Review the Privacy Policy before sending sensitive footage. No browser extension, desktop installation or account is required.
Run a first stabilization pass
- Open the Video Stabilizer.
- Select your recording and review the source preview where available.
- Start with Smoothing at its default value of 10.
- Select Start Conversion and wait for both processing passes.
- Preview the returned MP4 and compare it with the original.
The slider supports values from 1 to 30. There is no live stabilized preview: the browser shows the source first, and the processed appearance becomes available only after the server finishes.
Why does the output look cropped?
Compensating for movement can reveal empty areas at the frame edges. Stabilization may crop or zoom the picture to keep these areas out of view. Higher smoothing can require stronger compensation, so it is useful to compare the default before increasing the value.
Check faces, signs and objects near every edge. Watch a section containing a deliberate camera pan as well as a relatively static section. A setting that looks good in one part may be too strong elsewhere. If framing becomes unacceptable, try a lower value or keep the original clip.
Check picture and audio before sharing
Watch the whole result for unwanted wobble, excessive cropping or changes in motion. Confirm that sound remains synchronized and that the MP4 plays in the destination application. The current processing path copies source audio, which means some audio codecs may be incompatible with its MP4 output.
The server also needs FFmpeg with vidstab support. If processing fails, the page should report an error; a local source preview is not evidence that stabilization succeeded. Keep your original and try a compatible source if appropriate.
